Dressing an Athletic Build
An athletic build carries width through the shoulders and chest with a relatively narrow waist. The goal is not to hide the frame but to soften its hard geometry so the eye reads flow instead of block.
Silhouette principles
- Break up shoulder width with open necklines — a soft V, a camp collar, or an unbuttoned overshirt.
- Let fabric fall away from the chest instead of clinging; drape reads expensive, tension reads tight.
- Keep the waist defined but never cinched — a half-tuck or a mid-rise trouser does the work.
- Balance an upper-heavy frame with a slightly fuller leg line: straight or tapered, never skinny.
Garments to reach for
- Straight-leg wool or heavyweight cotton trousers
- Unstructured single-breasted blazers with a natural shoulder
- Fine-gauge merino knits in matte finishes
- Camp-collar shirts and soft-collar oxfords
- Longline overshirts that skim the hip
Cuts that fight the frame
- Padded or roped shoulders that add width you already have
- Compression-fit jersey that maps every contour
- Skinny denim that exaggerates upper-body volume
- High-shine synthetics that stretch across the chest
Fragrance layering for this frame
Fresh-woody accords sit best on an athletic presence — bergamot, vetiver, and cedar keep the impression clean and energetic without amplifying a frame that already commands space.
